Testo gels - absorption and blood test timing & blood test results
« on: September 23, 2017, 01:44:15 PM »
I'm just wondering, especially for those of you on gels or creams, when do you get your blood taken in relation to your last application of gel and what kind of levels do your blood test results show?

Recently I got some done privately and I was surprised at how low the result was.  I had blood taken approximately 24 hours after my last application of gel which is what I have done in the past.  I think this is the lowest result I've had ever, both on and off TRT.

Testosterone: 7  (7.5 - 31)
Free T  0.136 (0.3 - 1.0)
SHBG 33 (16 - 55)
Oestradiol  46 (0 - 192)

I don't know if they recently changed the formula in Testogel but I am noticing more of the white powerdy stuff on the skin after application.  So I wonder if I have developed absorption issues. My skin is very dry at the moment as well.

I have scope to increase my dose as I was using 1.5 packs of gel per day but my actual prescription is for 2.    Beyond that will mean a visit to the GP... who I know won't do anything but refer me back to an endo because they don't do injections at my GP surgery.

Hey Big V,

Yeah I used to get white deposits on my skin when I was on Testogel.

I'm not surprised at your test results on 1 1/2 packs a day to be honest. I always get tested as you have done, courtesy of my doc, who, if the level returned was below 12 nmol/l increased my dose. I am on Tostran, but the same rule applies.

If you are starting the day low, then you aren't getting enough from whatever you are taking to keep you symptom free for 24 hours. In his eyes that level is 12 nmol/l.

That is the minimum to expect from TRT in my book.

If it were me, I'd slap on both packs, especially as it's prescribed.

Cheers,

Nick

Testogel was the first method of treatment I was started on and didn't do a thing for me, I was on two packs for 6 months waste of time on me :(

For your comparison, I've only had 1 blood test since starting on testogel about 18 months ago and my 8am test (24 hours after last testogel application 1 x sachet) came back as 9.6 nmol/L [6.5 - 24.8]. GP seemed happy with this. I've never had a problem with any residue on my skin though.

Yeah I am going to start putting on both packs.  I was just surprised because I have been on TRT quite some years now and this was a very low result compared to my usual baseline.

I know a lot of people try gels and do not get the results they had hoped for, so maybe I was just getting lucky and over absorbing before but now I am getting what most people would get?

I started gaining weight recently as well so I wonder if that is because my T level has been lower than optimal.

Yeah it could be down to the lower level, but also, some guys produce Oestrogen with gels, so worth checking.

Cheers,

Nick

Jumping in on here as I'm a bit stuck at the moment myself.

Been on Tostran for 8 weeks at 4 pumps per day, had a blood test after 4 weeks, 2 hours after application which came back at 15.7, not had anything since then, went to see my GP yesterday to try to increase my dose but he wont do anything unless told by the endo, then found that my GP surgery hadn't even told the endo my blood test result, next appointment with the endo is 2 weeks today.

The priority here is to ensure your surgery pass on the four-week test results to the specialist. No doubt the endo will want to perform their own tests at the appointment but another round of basic blood tests done by the GP would be handy too for you to take for the appointment: Total testosterone (morning sample), SHBG, Albumin, and maybe even oestrogen if they're willing. Most important of all is the aforementioned blood tests at four weeks. They'll need the time, date, and results.

Best regards.
Craig

Thanks Craig  :)

Got a copy of the 4 week blood test and asked them to send to the endo as well, doesn't help that even though the endo is at a hospital 3 miles away it's in a different borough so they don't have computer access to my records. Think I'll go back to the GP and ask for a 9am blood test and not apply the gel beforehand, pretty sure I'm shut down now but will also ask for lh and fsh to be tested too. This is the GP who said that SHBG is only for women though so we'll have to see what he says.

Cheers
Dave

SHBG for women. He is joking I take it? SHBG is just as viable and essential to male health as it is to a woman's.

You need an SHBG test to quantify how much of the testosterone (total) in your body is likely to be active (beneficial to you) and not bound to aromatising proteins like "SHBG" albumin, oestrogen and others, which won't be beneficial.

Agree with everything you said about testing time and no application of gel etc.

All the best.
Craig

Well, didn't get a blood test off the Dr but had an appointment with the endo this week (yet another different consultant, haven't seen the same person twice) didn't put my gel on in the morning assuming they'd want a blood test without application, nope, they aren't interested in those, want me to do another blood test 2 hours after application and take it from there. I explained that the initial benefits have virtually gone and I'm feeling symptomatic again and he said that they may up the dose depending on the next blood test and that they'll see me again in 6 months.

Don't ya love the nhs?!

ps: no, my GP wasn't joking about SHBG being for women only!  :o

Six months time!? I'd return to the GP and tell them about this. If he/she is sympathetic they might do the test at the clinic and book you in for an earlier appointment.
There are so many things wrong with the way you've been treated here.

Regards.

Yep 6 months, got the appointment letter today for end of April  >:( My GP won't do anything unless told to by the endo and he will probably think that 6 months is right as he has no clue about any of this, will go for my blood test tomorrow (2 hrs after application) and see where that leads, unsure of what else to do? There is a number on the appointment letter I can phone to try to get an earlier appointment, might try to get it down to 3 months.

Whats the Point in testing 2 hours after application?! seems fruitless to me.

All its going to show is a sky high level, I hope your endo isn't being a snide little... and trying to set you up, as it'll be sky high and most likely give reason for dose reduction or giving an excuse for cessation of therapy, sorry to sound paranoid.

I second what Craig said, talk to your GP.

:)

The problem is the GP would probably think the endo(s) is doing things right as he doesn't know much about it, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place  :(
